Check the clarity and strength of the audio feed into the balanced modulator with a scope then work your way from there. Depending on the chassis, some have a trimpot that sets this but isn't mentioned in the service manuals, if this is cranked up too high it will distort and only affect SSB.
This is assuming that the alignment that didn't help was done properly.

Marty.

Alignment procedures cannot increase SSB power output beyond 5 watts.

Could the final driver or power amplifier be the cause?

When you say alignment, do you mean it was done properly or did someone just peak the trimpots/cans etc?

Michael

yes thats what i mean, there are a few people knowing as screwdriver kings and they thing they know what they are doing and don't really and don't own the right equipment
What can i say but just that

Does anyone have advice on the possible cause of distorted audio on SSB.  AM transmit audio is fine.  The radio puts out 4 watts on AM and just 5 w on SSB.  Alignment procedures cannot increase SSB power output beyond 5 watts.
