In the NRMA magazine Open Road, on page 15 there appears a small article "Breaka-breaka", regarding UHF CB emergency channels.? In part, the article reads "Channels 5 and 35, which are maintained by the Federal Government, are for the exclusive use of Citizens Radio Emergency Service Teams (CREST) to provide communications and other support services during disasters and emergencies."
Not only is this information wrong and extremely misleading, in our opinion it also has the potential to place lives at risk as it is clearly telling people NOT to use the emergency channels or it "may result in the Australian Communications and Media Authority confiscating your equipment and slapping you with a fine."
Contrary to popular belief, the emergency channels are still used for safety-of-life emergencies and many other incidents, especially in places where mobile phones may not work very well. In these regions it is likely that at times other channels may also not be used very much, and our obvious concern is that emergency monitors listening to the allocated emergency channels will be by-passed by people seeking help because of the information in this article.
ACREM has responded to NRMA, with no reply as yet, and has also issued a Media Release. See our page at
www.acrem.org.au/nrma.asp for updated information.
We ask that EVERY CB user also contact NRMA Open Road and let them know that the information presented is wrong - that the emergency channels are there for anyone to use, that CREST is not the only group or body permitted to use the channels, and that they are not intended solely to provide communications during disasters.? The Editor of the Open Road can be contacted at:
