In a car chase worthy of the Blues Brothers, or perhaps The Dukes of Hazard, a police car has become stuck in a stormwater drain after a high-speed pursuit in Sydney's south-west.

Two people are in hospital and a police vehicle has minor damage after officers pursued a 4WD through Wakeley at 5.45am.

The pursuit began when officers saw the 4WD leaving a shopping centre in a "sudden manner", a police spokeswoman said.

"Police have tried to pull over a suspect vehicle, the vehicle has continued to drive on with police pursuing them.

"The car has not stopped, it has raced away."

Police chased the 4WD to Shoalhaven Street where it then entered Esperance Reserve, she said.

"There has been a male and female in that car and they have apparently launched their car over a stormwater drain," she said.

"Police have become stuck in the stormwater drain when they followed."

Neither officer in the pursuit vehicle was injured but the accident caused minor damage to the police car, she said.

The police car has since been removed from the drain.

The man and woman in the 4WD were arrested and taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries. Police were unable to say how their car was stopped.

The man and woman under police guard in hospital and police expect to lay charges later today.

What can i say but just that
